Sutherland Shire Council has switched on an entertainment precinct across Cronulla town centre, being the first beachside precinct of its kind in NSW.
The precinct takes in Cronulla Station, Cronulla Mall, Kingsway, Gerrale Street, Surf Road and Ocean Grove Avenue. It also covers Dunningham Park, Monro Park, Cronulla RSL, Cronulla Sailing Club and both surf clubs.
Council lodged a planning proposal and noted a significant drop in Cronulla’s nightlife and going-out venues since COVID-19.

The loudest weekend limits sit at the intersection of Kingsway, Elouera Road and Gerrale Street. This is home to Northies, Old Joe’s and Zinc Bar, where acoustic testing recorded DJ sets on a Friday night. Limits step down towards the residential streets to the south and the tightest settings apply near Gunnamatta Bay.
Dedicated live music and performance venues can also apply for an extra 60 minutes of liquor trading.
For developers, the precinct runs on the agent-of-change principle. Any new apartment, hotel or other noise-sensitive building needs an acoustic report showing bedrooms and living areas meet internal entertainment noise targets. Laminated glazing is typically enough to meet them.
The mixed-use building under construction at 3 – 23 Kingsway already specifies glazing above what the precinct requires on its Kingsway frontage.
