One of western Sydney’s largest bulky goods retail hubs is preparing for a significant expansion, with Harvey Norman, the owners of the Penrith Homemaker Centre, advancing a planning proposal that would allow the site to grow both in scale and economic impact.
The homemaker centre, located at 13 – 23 Pattys Place in Jamisontown, sits on a 6.4-hectare parcel within the E3 Productivity Support zone. The site is already home to an array of large format retailers, including Spotlight, Fantastic Furniture, Petbarn, Supercheap Auto and Anaconda. It includes basement and ground-level parking and to the northwest lies a vacant vegetated land and a detention basin, both part of the overall landholding – and now at the heart of the plans for expansion.
The planning proposal, being coordinated by Knight Frank, seeks to increase the building height on part of the site. Under the current controls, the limit is 12 metres, and the amendment would split the height to 15 and 19 metres on specific portions of the land.
This change is necessary to enable a second level to be added to the southwestern boundary of the homemaker centre, which would unlock new specialised retail floor space. Additionally, the expansion is projected to generate over 94 ongoing direct and indirect jobs once operational.
Over 4 million people visit Penrith Homemaker Centre annually, underlining the centre’s pull and catchment power. Supported by a direct catchment population of over 336,000 people – expected to swell beyond 1 million by 2031 – this is a retail site with both present performance and future promise.
