Inner West Council has locked in a major refurbishment of Leichhardt Oval, formalising a long-planned rebuild of the stadium’s core spectator and player infrastructure.
The proposal reshapes the venue through a new northern grandstand, a rebuilt western stand and a complete replacement of the lower seating bowl. Fixed seating increases materially, but the overall spectator capacity remains unchanged at around 19,000.
The western stand is the centrepiece of the works. The existing ground floor will be demolished and rebuilt to deliver new player change rooms, medical and officials’ facilities, while upper levels are reconfigured to provide upgraded seating, corporate areas and broadcast facilities. A new mezzanine level is inserted within the existing structure.
A new northern grandstand delivering 1,722 seats is proposed over the existing embankment, introducing a concourse with food and beverage facilities. The lower seating bowl surrounding the field is replaced entirely to address compliance, accessibility and spectator amenity.
Leichhardt Oval’s location within a dense Inner West recreational precinct, approximately 700 metres from Leichhardt North Light Rail and adjacent to the Bay Run, underpins the case for reinvestment rather than relocation as event access patterns continue to shift.
Construction is scheduled to follow the 2026 season, with completion targeted ahead of the 2028 NRL season.
