NSW Ports has received approval from the Independent Planning Commission to extend the quay line at Brotherson Dock, Port Botany, by 314 metres.
The approval, granted on 23 September 2026, covers the southern side of the dock at 36 – 42 Friendship Road, home to DP World’s container terminal.
DP World’s quay line can currently berth two of the longer container ships now calling at Port Botany, plus one shorter vessel. Hutchinson and Patrick, on the northern side of the dock, can each berth three.

The extension brings the southern quay line to around 1,250 metres, matching the other two terminals.
To make room, the port’s existing bulk liquids berth, which handles fuel, gas and chemicals, will be demolished and rebuilt further south, between the second bulk liquids berth and Molineux Point.
The scheme adds 5.3 hectares of wharf, made up of 4 hectares of reclaimed land and a 1.3 hectare deck on steel piles. The reclaimed land will be filled with around 600,000 cubic metres of sand dredged from Brotherson Dock itself.
Ships longer than 360 metres are increasingly common on global routes, and NSW Ports’ 2063 Master Plan identifies the need for additional berthing at Port Botany.
