🕍 Uniting Church’s Landmark Burwood Tower

By Charbel Abousleiman

#1 Place for Development in Sydney

The Uniting Church, long embedded in the community fabric of the suburb, is spearheading one of the most ambitious mixed-use redevelopments in Sydney’s inner west – a $329 million build-to-rent precinct that will transform its landholdings at 134A – 134C Burwood Road and 29A – 33A George Street.

Uniting’s 5,028 sqm will be redeveloped into 488 build-to-rent apartments across three buildings, rising up to 50 storeys. The total floor area will be more than 45,000 sqm.

At present, the site hosts a cluster of existing uses – the Burwood-Croydon Uniting Church, a hall, a pre-school and a two-storey commercial building, car parking and six detached dwellings.

Rather than replace its history, Uniting plans to retain and celebrate its existing heritage building as the centrepiece of the new development. It will be accessible from all sides, framed by public plazas and act as a community anchor amid the surrounding towers.

The design is arranged into three primary structures:

  • Building 1: The main mixed-use tower at the rear of the site, containing build-to-rent apartments and resident amenities.
  • Building 2: A retail and commercial podium to the south of the church, providing new street activation and office space.
  • Building 3: An addition to the north of the existing hall, expanding the community and learning functions.

An early learning centre, commercial offices, small-format retail and communities facilities will also be delivered as part of the project.
