The Uniting Church has lodged plans for a 50-storey build-to-rent tower behind its heritage-listed church on Burwood Road.
The 5,028 sqm amalgamated site spans 134A – 134C Burwood Road, 33 George Street and 29A – 33A George Street. It sits about 300m north of Burwood Station and 700m from the future Burwood North Metro station.
The site currently holds the church and its school hall, a car park, a two-storey commercial building, a pre-school and six houses.

The site has a 60m height limit but the Uniting Church is planning to increase that to 168 metres with a 9:1 floor space ratio.
The tower would deliver 492 build-to-rent apartments, which will sit above ground-floor retail, a floor of commercial office space and a childcare centre.
A five-storey retail building would line a new laneway south of the church. A single-storey annex would turn the 1874 school hall into a community building for church and local use.
The whole ground plane, about 2,650 sqm, would open to the public as a network of plazas and laneways linking Burwood Road to George Street, with the church at its centre.
The church was built in 1880 for Burwood’s Congregational congregation to a design by architect Thomas Rowe after the early church on Burwood Road burned down in 1879.
